Taught by Kevin Henderson
Accompanied by Ewan Thompson, guitar
100 minutes
Kevin Henderson was born and raised in Scotland’s Shetland Islands,
an archipelago with a rich and highly renowned fiddle tradition. He is
widely regarded as one of the world’s finest Celtic-style fiddlers and is
in hot demand, playing with some of the best-known groups and
musicians in the traditional music scene.
On this 100-minute tutorial, Kevin covers five classic tunes in
traditional Shetland style. He breaks each one down in note-for- note
detail, pausing to offer valuable tips and exercises. The clear
onscreen angles show bowing, fingering hand and musical notation
simultaneously. Although a basic knowledge of the fiddle is necessary,
these lessons are taught slowly and carefully enough so that even a
near-beginner can play the tunes.
The pieces you’ll learn to play include up-tempo dance tunes as well
lovely as slow airs, including Oliver Jack (reel); Da Delting Bridal
March (slow march); Vallafield (jig); Da Trowie Burn (slow air) and
Ahint da Dykes o’ Voe (reel).
Bio
Kevin Henderson began playing the fiddle at the age of 9, taking
private lessons with highly renowned Shetland fiddler, Trevor Hunter.
At the age of 10 he began studying under the late great Willie Hunter,
arguably Shetland’s finest-ever fiddler.
Kevin is a founding member of the award-winning Shetland
powerhouse, Fiddlers’ Bid. He has also been a member of folk music
legends Boys of the Lough; the Scottish super-group Session A9; and
co-founder of the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc.
In 2011 Kevin released his debut solo album, “Fin Da Laand Ageen” to
great critical acclaim. He has toured extensively throughout the US,
Canada, Japan, Australia and Europe, and has performed on TV and
radio programs all over the globe.
