A Nuts & Bolts Approach to Chords – Rolly Brown
Rolly Brown is a lifelong student of the guitar. Beginning in 1964, at age 15, he spent the next 16 years as a self-taught fingerstyle folk, blues, and ragtime guitarist. After winning the National Fingerpicking Championship in Winfield KS in 1980, Rolly got serious, and studied with several east coast jazz masters, including Joseph Federico and John Carlini. Starting in the mid-90s, he turned his attention to flatpicking, with an emphasis on swing and gypsy jazz. For the past 15 years, he has been a perennial favorite instructor at guitar seminars and camps, owing to his easy to understand, nuts and bolts approach to teaching the guitar. Rolly lives in rural Bucks County PA with his wife Janice and a couple Australian dogs, where he plays and teaches guitar, teaches T’ai Chi Ch’uan, and practices and teaches classical Chinese Acupuncture.
“Life is short! Music is important! Don’t procrastinate about something you actually want to do! Go to guitar camp for a week. Go to jams and festivals! Music enriches your life! Do what you love! You’ll be happier and healthier. You’ll meet some wonderful people, one of whom may be yourself.” – Rolly Brown
This lesson is designed to set you on the road to playing chordal swing and jazz guitar with the freedom of an accomplished improvisor. It can help you hold a large repertoire of chords in your head, without recourse to “chord dictionaries” or other written material, and to then learn how these chords go together into sequences commonly found in swing and jazz standards and other music of the past century and beyond.
Material covered includes:
• The simple “240 chord” exercise: 3 minutes a day to develop a great
chord repertoire.
• The five stringsets for 4 note chord voicings.
• The 3 basic chord families; how they work with each other, and how
the art of “chord substitution” provides an infinite amount of
variability.
• The 3 most common systems of chord progression and their variations.
• How to start applying this material to actual tunes.
Tab/music material is on the DVD as a PDF file
