That’s exactly what I think is happening in our industry – that we believe in something that may not necessarily be true.
This paradox is causing many Local Marketers to struggle — and it’s fooling many into following a theory that could actually run your business into the ground!
What am I referring to?
I’m referring to the idea that we need to focus on getting results (new prospects / busines) for our clients.
Now why do I say that?
Isn’t that with this industry is all about? Getting results for our clients.
Well, yes and no.
You see when we focus our service delivery and our messaging on results, we’re putting blinders on our clients and driving them to judge us based SOLELY on our ability to generate sales.
This can be rewarding and you can accomplish a lot — but the issue is that there’s a LOT in this equation that is out of your control.
Consider how the following might affect your ability to generate new business for a client:
The client’s mindset and ability to close sales
The client’s resources related to closing sales
The client’s engagement with their team and ability to train them to sell
And above all else… Your client’s ability to take advantage of what you’re doing for them!
Now take one wild guess WHO your client will blame should they NOT have the training, resources and/or team to take advantage of the interest you’re generating?
YOU.
If you ask me, that’s a bit scary and RISKY to say the least — putting your potential to succeed in the hands of your client — I don’t know a successful local marketer under the sun that would recommend such a thing!
And yet, chances are, you are taking this EXACT approach at your local marketing business.
Luckily, Putting A Focus On Providing Results
Is NOT Your Only Option
The good news is, I was able to escape the paradox that is poisoning the Local Marketing community.
While it took me years of trial and error and a LOT of wasted resources, I found a solution that allowed me to scale by Local Marketing business, Kutenda, to over 400 clients and over $100,000 per month in RECURRING revenue!
I found an approach that meant I had to make a MAJOR SHIFT in my thinking — but it allowed me to stabilize my business to the point where I could actually HAND PICK the consultative clients I wanted to work with — who had the resources and know-how to convert the interest we could generate for them.
After All, the BEST way to get rich consultative clients who are great to work with IS TO NOT NEED THEM!
The result?
We made a shift from focusing on results based services to focusing on ACTIVITY based services.
When I say ACTIVITY based services, what I’m referring to is things that local businesses NEED to get done but that do NOT entail immediate ROI.
Let me give you a few examples:
Sending regular newsletters to prospects and customers
Sending out thank you cards to customers
Writing a weekly blog post
Doing regular Social Media updates
These are all FUNDAMENTAL things (Marketing 101!) that small businesses know they should be doing but are not getting done. And they happen to be services you can offer at VERY HIGH MARGINS.
We made the shift to selling lower end, repeatable, scalable ACTIVITY based services like the ones I listed above and it WORKED!
We were seeing longer term customers who did NOT spend their time agonizing over the cost of our services and questioning our results.
AND because the services (Social Media being the most popular) were so basic — we came up with processes to AUTOMATE THE ENTIRE EXECUTION OF THEM!
Does that mean we were forced to give up our more intensive consultative services?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!
It meant our team was not bogged down with fulfillment work and our margins were through the roof!
It meant I had a foundation of recurring revenue paying my bills AND my resources and team were freed up!
It meant I was finally able to hand pick the higher paying clients I WANTED to work with — that would be an enjoyable relationship and GOOD for my business.
