Many therapies involve brief lengths of treatment, including a single session. A structure will be presented for organizing the tasks and skills involved in different phases (pre, early, middle, late, and follow-through) of therapy. Numerous case examples, including video, will illustrate brief therapy techniques useful both in initial sessions and in the course of longer treatments.

- Describe brief therapy techniques that may be useful in different clinical situations.
- Consider application to participants’ own cases.

Michael F. Hoyt, PhD, is a psychologist in independent practice in Mill Valley, California. He is the author and editor of numerous books, including most recently Brief Psychotherapies: Principles and Practices, Therapist Stories of Inspiration, Passion, and Renewal: What’s Love to Do with It?, and (with M. Talmon,) Capturing the Moment: Single Session Therapy and Walk-In Services. He is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and has been honored as a Continuing Education Distinguished Speaker by both the American Psychological Association and the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors, as a Contributor of Note by the Milton H.
