Description:
The application of culturally-informed practices taking into account socio-cultural and historical contexts and intersecting identity factors is essential to ethical practice. In this presentation cultural-centered frameworks are reviewed as tools to recognize unconscious biases and to enhance respectful and inclusive engagements with individuals, groups, and communities. This presentation is informed by the APA Multicultural Guidelines and the Multicultural Counseling Competencies (Sue, Arredondo & McDavis, 1992). Examples from clinical and organizational practice will be introduced.
Educational Objectives:
- Recognize historic and socio-cultural contexts that intersect with cultural attributes or worldviews.
- Apply the Dimensions of Personal Identity to recognize intersecting identities.
- Identify two examples of personal cultural awareness and two examples of awareness of clients’ worldviews.
- Identify 2 interpersonal and organizational behaviors that promote inclusion and exclusion based on cultural factors.
- Define at least 5 terms such as aversive racism, implicit bias, stereotype threat, microaggressions, political countertransference, and other concepts relevant to inclusive psychotherapy practices.

Patricia Arredondo, EdD Related seminars and products: 6
For the past 35 years, Dr. Arredondo has published extensively in the areas of cultural competency models and guidelines, Latinx mental health, and organizational diversity strategy. She has co-authored six books and numerous scholarly articles. Dr. Arredondo is a licensed psychologist and long-term tenured faculty for graduate programs in Clinical Mental Health and Counseling Psychology. She is sought after for keynote presentations and consultations in higher education domestically and internationally. In 2017, she delivered programs with major U.S. universities as well as in Qatar, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. She is bilingual in English and Spanish. Her doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology is from Boston University. Currently, she is President of the Arredondo Advisory Group and a Visiting Professor at Arizona State University.
